George Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022) is a beguiling, visually opulent meditation on love, longing, and storytelling. While it may have flown under the mainstream radar, this fantasy-romance drama has earned a cult following for its imaginative scope and philosophical heart. Based on the short story "The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye" by A. S. Byatt, the film unfolds primarily through the intense, dialogue-driven encounter between Dr. Alithea Binnie (Tilda Swinton), a skeptical narratologist, and a Djinn (Idris Elba), whom she accidentally releases from an antique bottle in an Istanbul hotel.
The film is, at its core, a nested narrative: the Djinn shares his centuries-long tales of love, betrayal, and imprisonment with Alithea, weaving a rich tapestry of myth and emotion that traverses ancient Arabia, Ottoman palaces, and tragic romances. Rather than rushing to make a wish, Alithea debates the value of desire itself—setting the stage for a profound dialogue on the human condition.
While Miller is best known for his kinetic Mad Max franchise, this project showcases his poetic, romantic sensibility.
