The Tomorrow War: Extinction Protocol (2025)
Genre: Sci-Fi | Action | Drama
Directed by: Chris McKay
Starring: Chris Pratt, Yvonne Strahovski, J.K. Simmons, Florence Pugh (new character)
Three years after the White Spikes were eradicated in the Arctic, humanity has begun to rebuild. The world believes the war is over. But peace is a fragile illusion.
The Tomorrow War: Extinction Protocol follows Dan Forester (Chris Pratt), a former soldier and science teacher who led the effort to stop the alien invasion before it began. Now living a quiet life with his family, Dan is pulled back into conflict when a signal is detected deep within the Mariana Trench — a message not from Earth, but from the White Spikes' creators.
A covert international agency known as Project Lazarus intercepts a pulse of alien code emitted from the ocean floor. Dan is approached by Colonel Lexa Voss (Florence Pugh), a brilliant and fearless tactician who believes the White Spikes were not the true enemy — but a bio-weapon sent ahead of a larger threat.
Dan, haunted by his visions of the future war and desperate to protect his daughter, joins a new strike team led by Lexa, including Muri Forester (Yvonne Strahovski), now a seasoned xenobiologist and AI strategist. Together, they uncover that the pulse originated from a dormant alien craft, buried for millennia under the Pacific.
When a research submarine makes contact, the crew vanishes — except for one survivor who returns... changed. His veins pulse with glowing green filaments, and he mutters only one phrase before collapsing:
"They are coming."
Against the warnings of governments worldwide, Dan and Lexa's team launch a descent into the trench aboard the U.S.S. Argo, a nuclear-powered sub retrofitted with alien tech. As they reach the wreckage, they find the impossible: a vast, intact alien ark.
Inside, time seems distorted. Creatures frozen in stasis — larger, more evolved versions of the White Spikes — begin to stir.
Muri discovers that these aren't drones. They’re generals — the apex predators designed to lead the invasion forces. The White Spikes were just the first wave.
Lexa, driven by a mysterious past mission, reveals that Project Lazarus had long known this day might come. She was sent to find and activate the Extinction Protocol — a failsafe buried within the alien ship that could wipe out all non-terrestrial DNA on Earth, including the invaders... but at a cost.
Activating it would also threaten human life.
Suddenly, the ship powers up. The generals awaken. Dan and the team fight desperately through biomechanical corridors as the creatures swarm. Explosions rock the trench, and the Argo is damaged, leaving no escape.
Lexa sacrifices herself to trigger the detonation, but it fails. Dan must make a decision: let the world face another invasion... or trigger the override manually, knowing he may never see the surface again.
He leaves a message for his daughter, and with Muri’s help, he reaches the ship’s core. In a moment of clarity, he understands — the war was never about time travel. It was about delaying humanity’s extinction long enough for it to evolve and fight back.
Dan activates the protocol.
A blinding pulse spreads through the ocean, destroying the alien hive and collapsing the trench.
Days later, Dan is miraculously found drifting in the ocean by a rescue crew — alive, but changed. He carries remnants of alien code within him, a living bridge between species.
In the final moments, Muri stands before a global council, stating,
“The tomorrow war didn’t end. It evolved. And we must evolve with it.”
A final shot shows the Arctic melting again… revealing another object beneath the ice.
“The war we stopped was only the beginning. Now, we fight for tomorrow’s survival.”
