Speed 2

Speed 2: Cruise Control (1997), directed by Jan de Bont, is the sequel to the high-octane 1994 hit Speed. Unfortunately, where the original was a masterclass in tension and action, this follow-up fails to capture the same energy, delivering a slow and often underwhelming ride.

The film follows Annie (Sandra Bullock), who returns without Keanu Reeves, and her new boyfriend Alex (Jason Patric), a SWAT officer. The couple embarks on what should be a relaxing Caribbean cruise, only to find themselves battling a madman (Willem Dafoe) who hijacks the ship and sets it on a deadly collision course.

Despite some impressive stunts and exotic locations, Speed 2 suffers from a lack of urgency and chemistry between its leads. The cruise ship setting lacks the claustrophobic tension of the original bus scenario, and the pacing drags in key moments. Willem Dafoe’s villain is eccentric but never quite terrifying, and the plot feels more cartoonish than compelling.

While Sandra Bullock remains charming, Speed 2 ultimately runs out of steam. It’s a sequel that tries to go bigger but forgets what made the original so gripping: tight storytelling, relatable stakes, and nonstop suspense. A disappointing voyage for fans of the franchise
