Rampage (2018) Review - sammyliterally

Loosely based on the 1980s arcade video game, Rampage follows Davis Okoye, a primatologist and ex-special forces soldier, whose close bond with a highly intelligent albino gorilla named George is tested when a rogue genetic experiment turns George—and two other animals—into massive, violent creatures. As they tear across North America, destroying everything in their path, Davis must team up with a discredited scientist and a mysterious government agent to stop the chaos and save his giant friend.

1. Dwayne Johnson’s Star Power

As always, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is magnetic and dependable in the lead role. His charisma and physicality carry the film, even in its most absurd moments. His relationship with George—part buddy comedy, part emotional core—adds surprising warmth.

2. Visually Entertaining Monster Chaos

The film delivers what it promises: giant monsters smashing cities. The CGI is well-rendered, especially during the massive final battle in downtown Chicago. The destruction is satisfyingly over-the-top, perfect for fans of mindless spectacle.

3. George the Gorilla

Among the monsters, George is the standout. His personality, humor, and emotional depth (especially through motion capture) make him more than just a rampaging beast. The bond between George and Davis gives the movie heart.

4. Fast-Paced & Action-Heavy

There’s never a dull moment. The plot moves quickly from one action set piece to another, making it ideal popcorn entertainment.

  • Thin Plot & Science Fiction Clichés
The story is extremely predictable, relying on generic evil corporations, rogue science, and government coverups. It lacks originality and depth, even by action movie standards.

  • Underdeveloped Villains
The antagonists, especially the Wyden siblings, are cartoonish and forgettable. Their motivations are paper-thin, serving only to move the plot forward.

  • Logic Takes a Backseat
Don’t expect realism here—scientific accuracy and plausible logic are sacrificed for spectacle. But for many viewers, that’s part of the fun.

Rampage (2018) is big, loud, and unapologetically dumb fun. It's not a film that aims for critical acclaim—it aims to entertain, and on that level, it succeeds. Thanks to Dwayne Johnson’s charm and impressive visual effects, it’s a crowd-pleaser for fans of monster mayhem and video game nostalgia. Just turn off your brain and enjoy the ride.
