After a long silence since Ice Age: Collision Course (2016), Blue Sky Studios returns with a fresh yet nostalgic adventure in Ice Age 6: The Meltdown Legacy. While the franchise has always been centered around fun, slapstick comedy, and prehistoric charm, this newest chapter adds an emotional core that revitalizes the beloved universe.
Set several generations after the original herd’s adventures, the story now follows Peach, Manny and Ellie’s grown-up daughter, who struggles to lead her own herd in a world that’s rapidly warming again. Glaciers are cracking, strange weather patterns emerge, and a mysterious new island made of volcanic ice appears in the North—sparking curiosity and danger.
When Sid discovers ancient cave drawings that warn of a legendary “Second Meltdown,” the group is forced into action. Manny, now a wise elder, joins Peach, Diego, and a new character—Rune, a sarcastic saber-tooth scientist—in an expedition to the volcanic island. Along the way, they reunite with familiar faces like Buck the weasel and yes—Scrat, who is still chasing that elusive acorn (now frozen inside lava).
What makes The Meltdown Legacy work is its balance of heartfelt storytelling, environmental themes, and classic humor. The film explores generational tension: Peach wants to prove herself as a leader but resents her father’s cautious nature. Their emotional arc drives the story forward and gives depth to what could have easily been just another animated romp.
Visually, the film dazzles. From crystalline ice caverns to glowing lava rivers, the animation is more detailed than ever before. The sound design and musical score (composed by returning composer John Powell) blend emotion and excitement with perfect rhythm.
There’s also a subtle but effective environmental message—reminding young audiences of the fragility of ecosystems and the importance of adaptation over domination. But it never feels preachy; the message is embedded within the characters’ journey.
Fans of the original films will appreciate the return of familiar humor—Sid’s clumsiness, Scrat’s chaotic side missions, and Buck’s over-the-top heroics. However, the fresh focus on Peach’s generation breathes new life into the franchise and opens the door for future installments.
