Consequences (Posledice), directed by Slovenian filmmaker Darko Štante, is a raw, emotionally charged coming-of-age drama that explores identity, masculinity, and desire within the confines of a youth detention center. It holds the distinction of being the first Slovenian LGBTQ+ feature film, and it pulls no punches in its honest depiction of repression, loyalty, and internalized conflict.
The story follows Andrej, a troubled teenager sent to a juvenile facility after committing petty crimes. Once there, he becomes entangled with Željko, the dominant and charismatic leader of the inmate group. At first, Andrej tries to prove himself to Željko, seeking protection and acceptance through submission and loyalty. But as the relationship deepens, Andrej's feelings become more complicated—his admiration begins to reveal a deeper, unspoken attraction.
Andrej’s inner turmoil grows as he struggles to reconcile his need for belonging with his growing sexual desire, especially in an environment where homophobia and hypermasculinity are rampant. The film captures this conflict not through heavy exposition but through glances, silences, and shifting body language.
Matej Zemljič delivers a vulnerable and compelling performance as Andrej, capturing the confusion, longing, and self-loathing that come with being closeted in a violent, judgmental world. The cinematography is often tight and claustrophobic, reflecting the oppressive atmosphere of the facility—and of Andrej’s mind.
Štante, a former youth counselor himself, brings a striking authenticity to the film. Consequences is not romanticized. It’s gritty, uncomfortable, and sometimes hard to watch. A thematic sequel—Consequences: Release—could follow Andrej several years later, now in his early 20s, navigating life after the facility. He’s free, but not whole. The trauma of his time in detention—and his unresolved feelings for Željko—still haunt him. He tries to live a normal life, holding down a job in a mechanic’s garage, renting a small flat, and staying out of trouble. But the past has a way of resurfacing.
When Andrej runs into Željko again—now also out of the system but stuck in petty crime—the encounter reignites both tension and unresolved desire. Željko is still magnetic, still dangerous, but now clearly struggling with his own demons. A power shift begins: Andrej, once submissive, is now the one in control, emotionally stronger, but unsure of what closure truly means.
The sequel could explore themes of queer survival, toxic masculinity, and the blurred lines between guilt, love, and liberation. It wouldn’t need melodrama—it could remain intimate, observational, and emotionally precise. The tension would lie not in action, but in silence: a hand brushing a shoulder, a cigarette shared in the cold, a glance that says too much.
Unlike the original, Release could offer a glimmer of hope. Andrej might meet someone new—a kind, soft-spoken man who helps him see that love doesn’t have to be a war. Or perhaps, in the end, Andrej learns to walk away—not from love, but from self-destruction.
