Abominable (2006)

After surviving a mountain-climbing accident that leaves him paraplegic, Preston Rogers (Matt McCoy) returns to his remote family cabin, only to witness a brutal Bigfoot-like creature attacking a group of young women next door. Confined to his wheelchair—with only skeptical law enforcement and a non-believing nurse for company—Preston assumes a Rear Window–style role, helplessly watching the creature’s rampage unfold

  • Hitchcockian Suspense: Borrowing from Rear Window, Preston’s immobilized vantage point amplifies tension as viewers recognize danger he cannot act upon .

  • Creature Effects: The practical Bigfoot suit—crafted by effects artist Christien Tinsley—is convincingly menacing, and the film leans into classic creature-feature gore with practical flair

  • Strong Supporting Cast: Horror icons like Jeffrey Combs, Lance Henriksen, Dee Wallace, and Paul Gleason add character depth and warmth in their brief but memorable appearances

  • Uneven Lead Performance: While earnest, Matt McCoy’s portrayal of Preston has been cited as lacking charisma, hindering emotional engagement

  • Genre Tropes & Predictability: Once the setup resolves, the film leans heavily on standard slasher formulas—isolated victims, one-by-one kills, and horror clichés .

  • Mid-paced Momentum: The film’s tension fizzles in places, particularly during its middle stretch before the Bigfoot finally goes on full display

  • Rotten Tomatoes: Critic score at 67%, mixed audience rating at 40%—indicating a divide between genre fans and broader viewers .

  • Metacritic: Reflects low critical support at 31/100, but a user score averages around 5.6/10

  • Cult Appreciation: Genre reviewers and fans often hail it as “one of the best Bigfoot horror movies,” praising its practical effects and tension

Abominable is a solid creature-feature with Hitchcock-inspired suspense, effective practical monster design, and enjoyable horror icon cameos. However, its inconsistent pacing and reliance on slasher tropes keep it from being a genre classic.
