TheΒ Mortal Kombat franchise has been a staple in the world of fighting games and martial arts cinema for decades, offering a combination of brutal combat, iconic characters, and a rich lore thatβs been adapted for movies, television, and comics. Mortal Kombat 2 picks up immediately after the events of the first film. After the death of Shao Kahnβs (played by TBA) forces, the Earthrealmβs defenders, led by Cole Young (Lewis Tan), have successfully thwarted an invasion that could have led to their realmβs destruction. However, this victory is short-lived as the threat of Outworld looms ever larger.
While Cole and the other champions, including Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Kano (Josh Lawson), and Jax Briggs (Mehcad Brooks), have fought against the forces of evil, they soon discover that the true battle is far from over. The Mortal Kombat tournament is a multidimensional event that has been raging across the realms for eons. Earthrealm has won its first victory, but to secure its continued safety, they must now enter the Mortal Kombat tournament itself, which has been revived and is set to take place on the blood-soaked sands of Outworld.
The narrative deepens as Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Kung Lao (Max Huang), and other returning characters train Cole and the rest of the Earthrealm warriors for what is expected to be a battle of unimaginable stakes. Meanwhile, Shang Tsung (Chin Han), the master manipulator and sorcerer of Outworld, conspires to once again tip the scales in favor of his realm, making use of his deadliest alliesβincluding Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), and a host of new, brutal fighters who have risen from the depths of the realms.
Directed by Simon McQuoid (who helmed the first Mortal Kombat film), the action in Mortal Kombat 2 will be more intense and epic, focusing on high-quality martial arts choreography and breathtaking visual effects. Expect larger-than-life arenas, from the sand-soaked wastelands of Outworld to the mystical temples of Earthrealm, each more visually rich than the last.
